Tips for the perfect Christmas table

A perfect and unusual holiday table usually requires more than the usual accessories such as flowers and candles. It's best to create a colour scheme and sometimes use unusual decorative elements. We'll show you what you should look out for and a few decorating tricks here.

Which colours to choose?

The first step is to decide which colours you would like to use for your table, whether for the Christmas festive table or a meal with your loved ones. You shouldn’t pay too much attention to trend colours, but rather to your taste. A touch of gold or silver in the form of cutlery, candlesticks, or napkin rings will add a festive touch. But using the classic Christmas colours red and green also quickly creates a festive atmosphere. Personally, I also find ‘dark’ tables, which almost look a little baroque, very beautiful. With the help of dark, heavy fabrics made of velvet or brocade, but also various silver plates as serving platters, a baroque table can be conjured up in no time at all. If you prefer a simpler look, you can work with light or white tableware and add a few colour highlights, for example with the colour of the cloth napkins or flowers.

Set the table!

As soon as the colour scheme has been decided, you’re ready to go! For a festive table setting, I like to choose a tablecloth that makes the whole thing that much more special. In the past, people used to have all kinds of centrepieces on the table for particularly festive occasions. These were originally intricately designed, filigree silver pieces that were placed in the centre of the table. I think this is a great idea, so I usually start by arranging a beautiful vase of fresh flowers at the table. To make your table truly unique, it is also a good idea to incorporate very quirky objects. An example of this could be prepared birds or other small animals under a glass lintel. Or, for a springtime table, place flowers such as tulips and daffodils with bulbs in a glass container with water. The more unusual and fun, the better. What’s more, it usually makes for a nice conversation…

Combine!

Personally, we always like to combine a bit of unusual crockery with my service. You can easily find individual plates, bowls and cutlery at flea markets or in second-hand shops. For example, we find it very nice to combine crockery for a course either made from old porcelain or perhaps use an unusual bowl for the soup or dessert. It doesn’t always have to be a classic soup plate. For example, you can serve salad in mason jars or your dessert cream in beautiful cut crystal glasses.

Flowers and candles, please!

Fresh flowers are essential for us and we like to place them in drinking glasses at each place setting or place them really large in the centre or at the end of the table. A table can look very festive with just a few well-placed flowers. We also like to use small sprigs of lavender or hyacinths with bulbs and soil, which look beautiful in a drinking glass.

Candles are just as important to me for a festive table setting. We like to combine different candlesticks in different heights, or simply a tea light in coloured glasses that provide a beautiful shimmer of light. The more candles, the better!

We hope that with these tips, your festive table will become the inviting centrepiece of your celebration!
